Shadows of Justice
Elite lawyer Yara is renowned in her firm for her unbeaten record. While visiting her hometown, she witnesses her childhood friend Shirley being abused by her husband, Wen. Yara intervenes, and upon learning she is a lawyer, Shirley clings to her as a lifeline, begging her to help file for divorce. Shirley brings seven other abused women to Yara’s home, all pleading for her assistance. Moved by their plight, Yara defies her colleague Liu Liu’s warning to "avoid taking on underdog cases" and agrees to represent them, despite her firm’s policy of charging a minimum fee of 10,000 yuan. The eight women readily agree, and Yara successfully secures convictions against their abusive husbands. However, Shirley and the others later renege on their agreement, claiming the cases were "too simple" and falsely accuse Yara of fraud, demanding a refund. They incite villagers to slander her and even resort to violence, forcing Yara’s family to return the "retainer fee." The ordeal leaves Yara’s father severely injured and comatose, her mother suffering a heart attack, and Yara herself imprisoned. To prevent the abusers from overturning their sentences on appeal, Yara chooses not to fight her own conviction and serves two years in prison, secretly plotting her revenge. After her release, Yara leverages the power of the Zhao family, a wealthy elite in Binhai, to become a consultant for the Lotus Village demolition project. Now wielding influence, she turns the tables on Shirley. Consumed by greed, Shirley and her husband collude with project manager Zack to seize Yara’s family land and fraudulently claim demolition compensation, even inciting villagers to expel the family.
